The underlying content, the images and text and the menus that youuse to organise the site might staythe same, but themes can present that content to the user in very different ways.

Yur current theme is always at the top left of this page.

You can try on different themes, or even swap to use a new theme permanantly using this page. Differrent themes will give yur site a very different look and feel, the beest thing to do is to try different themes on.

If yu want to keep the theme you have but twek it & add basic information abut your site, then click on the blue ‘customise’ button on your current theme.

This opens up a new menu, that allows you to tweak some of the features of your current theme.

You can also upload a new background image for the headline of your site, which is known as a header image.

Click on Fonts to change which font your site uses.

Click on colours to change the background colour scheme.

If you have made changes that you want to save, click on the blue ‘Save & Publish’ button.

How to write and publish a wordpress post

This guide will show you how to write and publish a wordpress post.

Starting a post

Before you login you will need to create an account for the site, ask Neil about this.

You will need an email address that you can access in the session, if you don’t have one you can set up a gmail email address here.

Login to your wordpress site by clicking on the ‘login’ link in the menu at the top of the site or by going to

Type your username and password into the fields and click on the blue login button.

On the left hand side of the webpage is the dashboard.

Click on ‘Posts’.

This will take you to the posts page, you will see a list of all the posts on the site.

In the top left, next to the title ‘Posts’ there is a button ‘Add New’ click on it.

This will open a ‘new post’ page.  This is a simple ‘what you see is what you get’ text editor.

You can create you post by filling out the different fields on this page.

Give your post a title that acts as a headline to summarise what you are writing about. Write the title in the title field at the top of the page.

The main content of the post (what other people will see), is written in the large text field. You can edit the text using the toobox above the text field, which works in a similar way to Microsoft word.

To create a heading, highlight the text you want to turn into a heading.

To highlight a piece of text, click at the beginning of the text and drag until you get to the end of it & then let go.

Click on the ‘paragraph’ button from the toolbar and select which size heading you want to use from the drop down menu.

Adding Media

To insert an image into the post click on the ‘insert media’ button and then click on the ‘select files’ button.  You will be asked to find an image file on the computer you are using. When you have found an image file then click on the blue ‘insert into post’ button.

To embed a Youtube video,  click on the ‘insert media’ button and then click on the ‘insert Youtube’ link to the left of the ‘insert media’ window.

Open another tab in your browser by clicking on the file drop down menu and then clicking new tab, or Press ‘ctrl & N’ if you are on Windows or ‘Command & N’ if you are on a Mac.

Go to and find the video you want to put in your wordpress page. Copy the web link from the top of the internet browser, then go back to your wordpress tab & paste the link it into the insert Youtube field.

Categories are used to organise the website.

A category is a lable we apply to a post, that we can use to sort our posts into different parts of the site. This is similar to keeping our clothes in drawers, we can create a place in the website menus for different categories. In a similar way to how we have different drawers for ‘socks’, ‘pants’ and ‘t-shirts’ we have different categories. To keep things organise we don’t have too many categories, in the same way that having too many drawers gets confusing, too many categories can get confusing too. Try to use categories that have already been defined if you can.

Adding Links

Open another tab, go to the web page you want to link to and copy the web address you want to link to.

Return to your post and paste the url link into the field.

Highlight the piece of text you want to turn into a link, then click on the ‘link’ icon and paste the link in.

Tags are a different kind of lable we can apply to our posts.

Tags are to help people find out posts on the internet and they aren’t used to organise the website. We can add as many tags as we like to posts, the more the merrier. Tags work like ‘keywords’, think of al the different ways you could lable your post and add theose lables as tags.

Setting a featured image

Most wordpress sites create feeds of posts, that show snippets of posts, with a title, a few lines and an image. People can then choose if they want to read your post, so having a good feature image is a good way to get people to attract readers.

To set the feature image click on the ‘set featured image’ link in Featured Image tab to the right of the page and select an image you have already uploaded or upload a new one.

Publishing your post

For the options to publish or save your post see the ‘Publish’ section at the top right of the posts page.

To publish click the blue ‘publish’ buton, the save as draft click that button.

If you want to set the post to publish at a certain time, click the ‘edit’ link next to the Publish immediately.

Every time you save a draft or publish a post wordpress version called a ‘revision’, to view the revisions click on the ‘Browse’ link next to revisions in the Publish tab.

To step back and forwards through previous versions of your post click on previous or next and then either choose to ‘return to the editor ‘ or ‘Restore this Autosave’ to choose that revision.
